When Your Child Asks “But How Do You Know?“ The Power of Epistemic Humility
The dinner table falls silent. You have just explained that the Earth orbits the Sun, and your seven-year-old looks at you with genuine confusion. “But how do you know?” she asks. In that moment, the easy path is to say, “Because scientists have proven it,” or, “Because I read it in a book.” But the harder, more transformative path is to pause, smile, and say, “That is an excellent question. Let me show you how we can find out together.” This everyday exchange is the crucible of healthy skepticism and curiosity—a chance to model epistemic humility, the recognition that our knowledge is partial, provisional, and always open to revision.
Epistemic humility is not weakness; it is intellectual courage. In parenting and teaching, it means admitting when we do not know something, showing how we arrived at our current understanding, and inviting the child to join the inquiry. When a child asks “But how do you know?” she is not challenging authority for the sake of defiance. She is practicing the very engine of critical thinking: the desire to understand the grounds of belief. If we respond with defensive certainty, we teach her that knowledge is a fortress to be guarded rather than a garden to be cultivated. If we respond with genuine curiosity about her question, we plant the seeds of lifelong learning.
Modeling this begins with small, intentional habits. Instead of declaring “That’s just how it is,” try saying “Here is the evidence I have, and here is why I trust it. What do you think?” When you are unsure, embrace the phrase “I don’t know, but I am curious too—let’s look it up together.” This does not undermine your authority; it redefines it. You are no longer an infallible source but a trusted guide who values truth more than ego. Children learn quickly that asking questions is safe, even celebrated, and that uncertainty is not a failure but an invitation.
Yet modeling healthy skepticism requires a careful balance. The goal is not to produce perpetual doubters who question everything to the point of paralysis, nor to raise cynics who dismiss all knowledge as relative. Rather, we aim for what philosopher Linda Zagzebski calls “intellectual virtues”—the disposition to seek truth while being aware of our fallibility. When a child asks about a conspiracy theory overheard at school, the parent who responds with “That sounds suspicious—let’s check the sources together” models far more effectively than one who simply says “That’s nonsense.” The former teaches method; the latter teaches obedience.
One of the most powerful tools in this work is the “how do we know?” game. When learning a new fact—about history, science, or even family stories—take a moment to trace the chain of evidence. How does a historian know what happened in ancient Rome? How do we know that the moon is not made of cheese? (Let the child propose a test.) This practice transforms doubt from a negative force into a constructive one. Doubt becomes a compass pointing toward investigation, not a wall blocking acceptance.
But beware of the trap: some parents, eager to model skepticism, swing too far into radical doubt, teaching children that nothing can be known for sure. This can breed anxiety and a sense of helplessness. The antidote is to distinguish between healthy skepticism and radical relativism. Healthy skepticism says, “I trust this claim provisionally because it has survived rigorous testing, but I remain open to new evidence.” Radical relativism says, “Nobody really knows anything, so all opinions are equally valid.” The former empowers; the latter disempowers. As you navigate questions with your child, explicitly name this distinction. When discussing a scientific consensus, you can say, “Scientists agree on this, but they got it wrong in the past, which is why they keep testing. That constant checking is why we can trust them more than someone who never questions.”
Another crucial practice is to model intellectual error gracefully. When you realize you gave a wrong answer earlier, go back to your child and say, “Remember when I told you that? I checked again, and I was mistaken. Here is what I learned.” This act of vulnerability is more powerful than any lecture. It teaches that doubt is not a sign of incompetence but a signal for growth. It also shows that correcting oneself is an act of integrity, not shame.
In the end, the child who learns to ask “But how do you know?” and receives an honest, curious, and humble response will carry that question into every corner of life. She will approach media claims with a discerning eye, evaluate political rhetoric with care, and navigate personal relationships with an openness to being wrong. She will, in short, become the kind of adult who can harness doubt as a catalyst rather than fear it as a threat. The dinner table conversation may begin with the solar system, but it ends with a blueprint for unshakeable confidence—not the confidence of certainty, but the confidence of knowing how to find out.
