This target becomes the explanation, the locus of blame, and the key to solving the mystery. When an individual feels uncertain or victimized by forces beyond their control, the idea that there is an intentional conspirator behind it all can be oddly empowering. It means the world is not random: it is rigged, but rigged in a way that can be understood and opposed. Doubt transforms into a kind of paranoid clarity.
These two biases do not operate in isolation. They are amplified by cognitive and emotional factors such as the need for cognitive closure, a low tolerance for ambiguity, and feelings of powerlessness or social alienation. People who experience high levels of uncertainty, perhaps due to personal crises, economic instability, or rapid social change, are more likely to seize upon conspiracies because they offer immediate, reductionist explanations. The more anxious or threatened a person feels, the more likely they are to see agency and pattern where none exist. This is why conspiracy beliefs often spike during periods of collective trauma, such as wars, pandemics, or political upheavals. The brain’s pattern detector goes into overdrive, desperately trying to make sense of a world that has lost its familiar structure.
